Soft Skills Training 4 Engineers

If tech is both problem and solution, nothing changes. Utterskills sharpens the part that does: you.

Cheat Code: Human Skills

Research shows that 85% of job success comes from well-developed soft and people skills, while only 15% comes from technical expertise.

Name one reason to keep ignoring this:

Well?

Future-Proof in the Era of AI

The future belongs to those in the middle who bridge human needs with AI-driven tech.

Tech frameworks go out of date fast, but solid soft skills stay with you for life. These are the skills AI can't replace.

From devs for devs

No soft skills course, no chair circles. Just solution-oriented work.

We teach experience, not theory. Lessons are based on real tech situations and the best career hacks from industry experts, shared exclusively with Utterskills.

Recognize These?

Being a software engineer today is way more than "just writing code," and it comes with pain most people never see. If you find yourself nodding at more than one of these, you're definitely not the only one.

Calendar vs. Code

Calendar vs. Code

"Meetings all day, webcam on, pretending to care as my brain begs to be anywhere else."

Your calendar turns into an endless wall of meetings. You're expected to be "on" all day, instantly responsive, and socially smooth on camera. By the time they end, you're too mentally drained to tackle real problems, and your real work feels constantly sidelined.

  • ⚠️ Constant context switching kills focus
  • ⚠️ Meetings without clear decisions
  • ⚠️ Long calls leave you mentally exhausted
Nobody listens

Nobody listens

"I've said it a million times. No one listened. Now we're in this mess."

When things go wrong, engineering gets blamed; when decisions are made, engineering gets sidelined. You calmly explain risks and consequences, get ignored, and then watch exactly what you predicted happen - again and again.

  • ⚠️ You build things you warned against
  • ⚠️ Your expertise is heard, not respected
  • ⚠️ Frustration turns into quiet resentment
Career stuck

Career stuck

"Without me everything would collapse, but I'm still overlooked for promotion."

Almost no one knows the codebase like you, but when promotions are decided, you're not even in the conversation. You feel critical to the system, yet invisible when it comes to your career.

  • ⚠️ Your role grows, your title doesn't
  • ⚠️ Critical to the system, stuck in the org chart
  • ⚠️ You're the unsung hero, not the leader
Future anxiety

Future anxiety

"How long until AI can do what I do?"

Every new AI update makes you wonder which part of your job is next on the chopping block. It feels impossible to keep up, and deep down you realize the job world you know is quietly ending.

  • ⚠️ Constant pressure to keep up
  • ⚠️ Uncertainty about your future skills
  • ⚠️ Fear of becoming obsolete

Totally common. Totally solvable.

These issues are widespread even amongst the big players.
Shift the human dynamics, and the rest of your process clicks into place.

How To Fix This

None of the problems above can be solved with more tech. The solution is beyond code, at a person-to-person level. All of your genius is useless if you can't make people understand it and trust you.

1. Understand the impact of human skills

Even in tech, it's a people business. Coding is just half the job. Solutions are made by humans, for humans, with humans - tech is just the tool. No soft skills, no impact, no career.

2. Adopt a business brain

Code is a means, not the end. Learn the game you're coding for: customers, benefits, costs, revenue, risk. Tie work to outcomes. With business acumen you prioritize better, argue smarter, and build what matters.

3. Become the go-to Expert

Stop being just the engineer, just the executor. Shift from I implement to I influence outcomes. Respect is earned, not demanded: organize yourself, be active in meetings, speak clearly, take ownership, create value.

Coding is half the job - we teach the other half.

About Us

Straight out of the Black Forest in Germany, we are Florian and Gigi, the founders behind Utterskills. We met studying computer science and have spent almost 20 years in the tech industry. Florian comes more from the tech side, Gigi more from the business side – so we know both worlds and where they clash.

We learned early: great developers aren't defined by clean code alone. How you communicate, handle chaos and work with people – that's the real leverage. We call it skills beyond code.

Because there were almost no useful courses for this, we decided to build them ourselves. Our logo is a bridge for a reason: Utterskills connects the tech and business worlds where devs actually work.

For our lessons, we asked dozens of experienced experts one question: "What are the top 3 tips you wish you'd had at the start of your career?" The result: practical, no-fluff industry hacks we happily use ourselves.
